The Politics of Scarcity

Dear Millennials,

Beware the politics of scarcity. It is as effective a weapon as fear. It is a weapon that turns us against each other. It is a weapon that makes us suspicious, stingy and scared. My friends, anything that can be used to turn you against another, to make you see your fellow humans as the enemy, or anything that can be used to create a division of us/them, theirs/ours, mine/yours- this is leverage. Anything that can be used to make you believe that you are going to lose something- this is leverage.

Believing that there  is a finite amount of recognition, of accolade means that you compete harder for something you already have. Believing that there will never be a job, you will never own a house, you will never save money because someone else got it first- that’s leverage. It’s tyranny of the mind. It keeps us at each other while those who can play the  game do so. If we are all fighting over the scraps, we don’t  really notice who is serving themselves into gluttony at the table, do we?

Take over the world, my Millennials, but do it together.

I love you so-
